Chemistry + Chemical Biology

Chemistry is the study of the basic structural units of matter—what things are made of, what their properties are, and how they act and interact.

Chemical biology applies logic and methods from chemistry to the study of complex and challenging questions in biology. To a significant extent, interest in chemical biology has been inspired by the growth of the biotechnology industry.

Computer + Information Science

In the Department of Computer and Information Science at IUPUI, applications of computer science range from biological and life sciences to software development—involving every aspect of life from homeland security to archiving cultural heritage. Here, you’ll develop and use innovative problem solving techniques to tackle the toughest technology challenges.

Environmental Science

Environmental Science is an interdisciplinary field of study that investigates the interrelationships in the modern environment of humans and natural phenomena and focuses on important modern concerns, like how our global climate is changing and how that change may affect human activities, how to maintain and improve vital natural resources like drinking water, and how to manage and balance the quality of the environment in the face of improving the quality of life in the United States and abroad.

IUPUI's program prepares students for graduate studies and for a variety of careers with emphasis on investigation of the environment by federal and state agencies, industry, and consulting firms. The program allows flexibility to accommodate the needs and interests of all students.

Forensic + Investigative Sciences

Student in labForensic science is the application of scientific methods and processes to matters that involve crime or the public. There are many branches of forensic science because almost any science has some applications to public or criminal matters. Because forensic scientists are typically required to testify and handle evidence, extensive background checks are done on all candidates for these jobs. Use of drugs, criminal history, serious financial problems, and/or dishonesty typically would disqualify candidates from being considered for forensic science positions.

Geology considers the physical forces acting on the earth, the chemistry of its constituent materials, and the biology of its past inhabitants. Geology also includes the study of the interrelationships in the modern environment of humans and geological phenomena and focuses on such important concerns as how our global climate is changing and how that change will affect human activities.

Mathematical Sciences

Mathematics is one of the oldest and most fundamental sciences. Mathematics is the science of quantitative relationships using numbers and symbols. Mathematicians use mathematical theory, computational techniques, algorithms and the latest computer technology to solve economic, scientific, engineering, physics and business problems. Mathematics is usually referred to as pure (theoretical and abstract) or applied (practical problem solving).  Mathematics includes the following specialty areas:   algebra, geometry, trigonometry, calculus, probability, and statistics.

Actuarial science deals with the analysis of financial consequences of risk.  Actuaries are highly trained professionals who are well versed in mathematical, statistical and economic techniques that enable them to evaluate financial risk of uncertain future events, especially those pertaining to health care, insurance and pension plans.

Student in labNeuroscience is a rapidly advancing field that addresses the structure and function of the nervous system, with particular focus on intersection between the brain and behavior. Neuroscientists routinely draw on the fields of psychology, biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics and computer science in their work, and that's one reason neuroscience is such an interesting and challenging field of study.

Neuroscience at IUPUI is an interdisciplinary program of the School of Science that offers students the opportunity to pursue baccalaureate degree training in cellular/molecular, computational, or behavioral neuroscience. No other program provides the cross-disciplinary research and learning environment that IUPUI offers our students.

Psychology is the scientific study of behavior and mental processes.  The goals of psychology are to describe, explain, predict, and change behavior (observable actions) and mental processes (thoughts, feelings, memories, beliefs). In our department, we focus on four major themes throughout the undergraduate curriculum: (1) psychology is a science; (2) behavior is a function of person variables, environmental variables, and the interaction of person and environment; (3) psychology has evolved in a socio-historical context, and its major theoretical perspectives reflect this phenomenon; and (4) socio-cultural context influences how psychological concepts are understood and applied.

IUPUI psychology specialties include: psychobiology of addictions, health psychology, industrial/organizational psychology, severe mental illness, stereotyping and prejudice.
